STRATA Memory, Surface, Touch Positioning her practice at the epistemological intersection of craft and art, Özgür Ceren Can presents a body of work in ceramics, glass, and felt weaving—disciplines where technique and skill remain central—in her exhibition STRATA | Memory, Surface, Touch. Can invites viewers to look beyond the material existence of these aesthetic surfaces and to reflect upon the strata of meaning that arise from the associations embedded in visual and tactile experience. The term strata, denoting the sequential layers that constitute the earth, is a concept rooted in both geology and archaeology. As accumulations of soil, time, and matter, strata become a productive analogy in Can’s practice. In ceramics, the fusion of clay, pigment, and glaze; in glass, the interplay of layered sheets; and in weaving, the consolidation of fibers through felting—all generate surfaces that function as palimpsests. They embody a dual condition, at once material and conceptual, preserving the traces of time and the memory of touch. By bringing together the knowledge of craft with the principles of contemporary art, Can creates objects that do not necessarily respond to utilitarian need, but instead speak to existential concerns. Ancient practices and contemporary symbols are interwoven, their forms and meanings reconfigured to reveal a hybrid aesthetic—one that negotiates between inherited traditions and the visual language of the present. Through this approach, she dissolves boundaries between the conceptual frameworks of craft and art, situating her practice in a dynamic continuum of past and present. Comprising works that emerge from this synthesis of scholarly depth, traditional craftsmanship, and contemporary artistic inquiry, Özgür Ceren Can’s eighth solo exhibition, STRATA | Memory, Surface, Touch, will be on view at the Çankaya Municipality Fikret Otyam Art Center from September 26 to November 9, 2025.
